TARA MANTRA

In short, Om Tare Tuttare Ture Svaha means “I prostrate (lie flat, face down)
to the Liberator, Mother of all the Victorious Ones”.

By calling on Tara’s protection from danger and from our fears with a sincere motivation to be relieved of our suffering for the benefit of all beings, we can gain the multiple benefits of selfish altruism, and compassionate action, becoming happier ourselves as we help others.

The true meaning of the Tara Mantra is greater than these few words can express – they can only point in the direction of the meaning. This short interpretation is based on a 1987 teaching by Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche of theKopan Monastery, Nepal*

Om Tare Tuttare Ture Svaha

Om is the cosmic sound that represents the whole universe, everything, all-ness, the past, present and future. Om is said to represent Tara’s holy body, speech and mind.

Tara means Liberator, Rescuer, or Saviour – a traditional explanation of the mantra is that it uses variations of the name Tara (Tare, Tutare, Ture) to represent three progressive stages of deliverance or salvation.

Tare is the Sanskrit invocation of Tara, it represents Mother Tara liberating us from true sufferings.

Tuttare represents liberation from danger and the 8 ‘disturbing thoughts’ of anger, attachment, doubt, ignorance, jealousy, pride, miserliness and wrong views, freeing us from the true cause of suffering.

Ture represents liberation from the ignorance of not knowing the absolute nature of the I, and all the disturbing thoughtsthat arise from this ignorance.

Svaha is similar to ‘Amen’, or ‘let this be so’. It represents closure: ‘may the meaning of this mantra take root within me’.
